Extra-Sensory Perception:

A Guide to Developing your ESP

Extra-sensory PerceptionESP stands for extra-sensory perception, which essentially refers to any of the senses outside of the normal range of taste, touch, sight, smell and hearing - for example, seeing or hearing something that isn't there or hasn't been said - or having a gut feeling that something is about to happen, without there being a rational explanation for it.

Most people have had some experience with ESP, whether it's thinking about someone just before they phone or before unexpectedly meeting them or knowing what they are going to say before they say it.

Incidents like these seem to happen randomly, however we are going to explore ways of 'tuning into' and developing this sixth sense - and there is a wealth of media to choose from, in order to do this. However, by becoming 'attuned' and by listening to our intuitive feelings, our chances of success are increased dramatically.

The first and probably the most important step towards developing your ESP is to be in a quiet state of mind, and this can be achieved through meditation, self-hypnosis or other trance states when you are in an altered state of awareness. This allows impressions to come through to you without the unnecessary chatter of the conscious, thinking mind.

So, how do you clear your mind? Thoughts are constantly flitting through your mind (even when you're not aware that they are). To demonstrate this, allow yourself 5 or 10 minutes whilst you conduct this experiment.

Take a pen and a piece of paper and write something down that you are going to think about. When you've done this, turn the paper face down and get on with some mundane job, like washing up or ironing.

After the given period of time, return to the paper, make a mental note of what you are now thinking about, and take a look at how different your thoughts now are.

The chances are that you will have associated so many things in your mind until you're thinking about something completely different.

Meditation isn't a skill that comes easily with most people, and a little practice is called for. Mantras are usually repeated in the mind and whenever a subject notices their thoughts wandering away, a conscious effort is made to return to the mantra. A mantra can be any word or phrase or chant that you wish, (a common one is ohm).

Mediation helps you to 'control' your wandering mind, rather like putting a leash on a dog and every time it tries to stray you pull it back to you.

If you're planning on doing 'readings' for people, whether it is Tarot, tea-leaves, psychometry, flower readings (all of which you will learn about on eMystica) or any other form of divination, then you will need to 'empty' your mind as much as possible before commencing. A little practice with meditation exercises can help you to do this. Your mantra could be the image of a clear blue sky, and every time a cloud passes over it you can be sure this will turn into a thought, so mentally push or blow the cloud away.

Your environment will help to set the mood and candles, black and silver silk cloths, incense, aromatic oils and mystic artefacts will create the right atmosphere for you to enter the trance state required. However you can also develop this state on a train or a bus, in a church or somewhere beautiful, outside in nature.

Aura Readings

If you're in a place where other people are present, you could practice 'tuning into' their auras. The Aura around humans is partly composed from EM (electromagnetic) radiation, spanning from microwave, infrared (IR) to UV light.

To test this for yourself, try holding your hands, palm facing, about 15 cm apart and then slowly moving them together, then apart and together again. You will notice warmth between the palms. This is the electromagnetic field which has been captured by Russian photographers and termed 'Kirlean Photography' (named after Seymon Kirlian, an amateur inventor and electrician of Krasnodar, who pioneered the first efforts on this process in the early 1940s).

To read an aura this you may need to de-focus your eyes.

Perhaps you have seen those Magic Eye books that were popular a few years ago? They called for a 'soft state of vision' in able to see 3D images. You can practice acquiring this visual state by holding your index finger in front of your eyes and looking at it with both eyes until you see two index fingers, then move the finger away and keep your eyes in the same focal state. It's not too easy at first but like anything else, practice makes perfect.

Auras are different with each individual and sometimes appear as a soft halo around the whole of their body, they can be different colours, some may be strong and vibrant, others may be weak and only just visible - or you might not even see them at all.

If you are able to tune into someone's aura then treat it with care and loving respect. Send out beautiful thoughts - these will be picked up at a higher vibrational level and will be returned to you in one way or another.

Whilst tuning into an aura you may have certain thoughts about the person entering your head or, you may feel sensations such as weakness, sadness, joy or happiness - these are being picked up from the person whose aura it is, however refrain from commenting about any of this until you've had more experience and have validated your 'hunches' later on.

Whilst the colour of auras relates to the chakra colours, they can vary in strength and hue. The meanings below are a simple guide and may not be applicable for each individual.

Red Your subject is concerned with the physical aspects of life, i.e. passion, anger, sexuality and energy.
Orange

This is also to do with sexuality but more on an emotional level. The person may be concerned about their ambitions - this is a 'power' colour and is the aura of someone who has the ability to demonstrate their unique abilities. They can sometimes be controlling.

Yellow This is an intellectual colour and relates to someone who is deeply reflective; they are also joyous, generous and unattached to worldly possessions.
Green A green aura denotes a spiritually healthy person, someone who tries to do well in everything they do.
Blue This person is concerned with communication, creativity and self-expression. It is the aura of someone with an inner sense of calm who is relaxed and balanced.
Indigo
This subject is intuitive and spiritually advanced; they follow their dreams and have much knowledge about the Universe.
Violet
A violet aura is only seen in a person who has achieved full spiritual awareness and is totally pure in spirit.

As previously mentioned, there will be varying strengths and hues and where the aura is weak or 'muddy' this could be interpreted as an area where that quality needs to be developed. If someone has a brown aura then they are likely to be negative and materialistic whilst a grey aura is often seen around those suffering from depression. If you see a mustard colour aura then it is likely that the subject is in a lot of pain.

Surprisingly perhaps, white auras denote serious disease or drug or alcohol related problems. In many cultures, white, rather than black, is associated with death and it is said that immediately prior to death, the aura becomes a brilliant white.

If you are interested in developing your auric reading ability then you could practice reading your own aura by standing approximately 1.5 m in front of a large mirror. To begin with it's preferable if the background behind you is plain white and there are no shadows.

Illumination should be soft and not bright and you should practice this for at least 10-15 minutes each day to increase your sensitivity and develop auric sight.

You may notice that auras around different areas of the body may change in colour or intensity and you should interpret your reading accordingly. Be careful not to confuse an aura with an after-image (for example if you look at a green spot for long enough and then at a white piece of paper you would see a red spot in a corresponding shape - this is the after-image).

When you feel comfortable with aura reading you may like to do 'sittings' for other people. This takes a certain amount of concentration on the reader's part, and patience on the part of whoever is having the aura reading done.

At first you might just get vague impressions about people. It's perfectly fine to mention whatever comes to you, however you should be careful about how you phrase anything negative that you see or feel. If you are wrong then it could act as a suggestion and unnerve the sitter.

It is possible to detect physical malfunctions in the body before they manifest as the aura will be the first place where symptoms become apparent - and for the same reason, it is easier to heal the body by consciously controlling the aura. The quality and colour of the aura can be manipulated by thought processes, for example, if you think happy and positive thoughts then this will be reflected in your aura.

Most children are naturals at reading auras but it is a skill that fades as they become preoccupied with the material world.
